Storyteller's corner

Reklamveteranen Mary Lee Sjönell rapporterar från Cannes Lions 2010

An Emotional Journey!

Actually, all the workshops and seminars in Cannes Lions Advertising Festival concern either the content for or technology of effective storytelling.  Sharing stories is the basis of our business and, some might argue, at the very base of what makes us uniquely human.

For The Roger Hatchuel Academy, I wanted to discuss Storytelling as the monitoring and predicting of the emotional response of potential consumers, over a period of time and  in different media! I wanted to do this by presenting a vocabulary which I believe effectively supports the complexity of Storytelling today.

…but getting into The Festival Palais was an emotional journey!

I forgot my Cannes Lions badge in my hotel room! And for those of you who have attended The Festival you know there’s no getting pass those Palais Door Guards without a badge.

I finally had to have a police escort to get into the room where The Academy Participants waited.

Well, I figured since I have a Posse why not come in dancing! Right?

So we began the seminar with some dancing, some swaying, and all loving, The Glee TV series version of ”Don’t Stop Believing” which was the theme of my presentation.

An hour and a half later, we finished our seminar with Susan Boyle’s ”I Dreamed a Dream” and those passionate, young Ad professionals were left with a clear (and physical)  understanding of the difference between the drama in stories and the dramaturgy of Storytelling for Advertising in the Digital Age.

Where's the brief, Yahoo?

I love Ben Stiller movies, comedy sketches, cameos, Blue Steel, the whole thing but why didn’t Yahoo! brief Ben before the  ”Laugh, Connect and Debate with Jeff Goodby and Ben Stiller” seminar. I felt so uncomfortable in the audience waiting for the real discussion to begin but realizing there was really no point.  And, trust me, that was not the point!

This year, Canneslions Festival presents a The new Film Craft Lions category.

The Arrival

marylee

The 08.30 SAS flight was crammed with AdFolk heading to Nice for ”The Festival.”

It felt like Guldägget in the air! Göran Åkestam, Pia Grahn-Brikell, Anna Serner and Mr. Wonderful, Saatchi/Stockholm Adam Kerj , to name a very few!

I thought, ”If we were to crash and wind up on a mystical island, would we advertise our way off?  Or would we just be lost?”

On the flight, Adam and I had a brief discussion about who controls the brand story today.  With Advertiser wanting to be present on every possible screen and constant social media input, we agreed that most agencies find themselves a little LOST.

However,  the flight arrived ”on time,” as SAS promised.
